Halloween Cleaning
Are Those Cobwebs Decorations or Have the Spiders Moved In? đ
October is a funny month to be a cleaner.
For most of the year, I spend my time getting rid of cobwebs. Then Halloween comes along, and suddenly people are buying them to hang around the house.

I must admit, it does make me laugh.
If I spot a cobweb in the corner at this time of year, I sometimes wonder whether it’s meant to be there or whether a spider has simply decided to join in with the decorations.
And to be fair to the spiders, some of them do a remarkably good job.
Of course, the real cobwebs are still coming down when I’m cleaning. I can’t have the spiders thinking they’ve been given the whole month off.
When cobwebs become decorations
It’s quite funny when you think about it.
Something I’d normally remove without a second thought suddenly becomes part of the Halloween look.
That’s probably the one time of year when someone might actually be pleased to see a cobweb in the corner.
I think that’s what makes Halloween a little different from other occasions.
A few cobwebs, a pumpkin or two, perhaps a skeleton sitting somewhere unexpected.
It’s all part of the fun.
A different sort of decorating
One thing I’ve noticed is how much effort some people put into decorating their homes for Halloween.
For some, it’s become almost as much of an occasion as Christmas.
There are pumpkins outside, decorations in the windows and all sorts of little details around the house.
Other people keep it simple, with perhaps a pumpkin by the front door or a few decorations for the children.
I quite like seeing the different ways people do it.
And I think Halloween gives people a chance to have a little fun with their homes without worrying too much about everything matching or looking perfect.
A crooked decoration or a slightly wonky pumpkin face can actually add to the effect.

Of course, Halloween arrives just as autumn is properly settling in.
The leaves are falling, the weather is getting wetter and there’s usually a bit more coming through the front door than we’d like.
A few leaves stuck to someone’s shoes, muddy footprints across the hallway and perhaps the odd paw print if you’ve got a dog.
It’s all part of this time of year.
I always think a decent mat by the front door earns its keep in autumn. It’s such a simple thing, but it can make quite a difference.
And I do like how homes start to feel a little cosier as the evenings draw in. A few pumpkins by the door seem to fit right in with that.
And then Halloween is overâŚ
It’s funny how quickly these little occasions come and go.
One minute, people are putting pumpkins by the door and getting the decorations out. Before you know it, Halloween has passed and everything is being packed away again.
And that’s when you sometimes notice the little things that were hidden behind the decorations.
Perhaps a bit of dust where something has been standing, a mark on the windowsill or a few bits left behind from the celebrations.
Nothing unusual, just the sort of things that happen when you’ve been enjoying your home.
I always think there’s something quite satisfying about putting everything back afterwards. Not necessarily giving the whole house a big clean, but just having a little tidy and getting things back to normal.
Of course, autumn doesn’t disappear with Halloween.
The leaves will still be finding their way through the front door, and there’ll probably be a few more muddy footprints before winter arrives.
But that’s just part of the season.

As for the real cobwebs, I’ll carry on removing those as usual.
After more than 10 years of cleaning homes and properties, I know they have a habit of appearing again when you least expect them.
And I suppose that’s what makes writing a Halloween blog rather amusing for someone who cleans for a living.
For a few weeks of the year, the very things I usually spend my time removing become part of the decorations.
So whether you’re decorating the whole house or simply putting a pumpkin by the door, I hope you enjoy Halloween in your own way.
And if you happen to spot a cobweb that you’re not quite sure aboutâŚ
Perhaps leave it until the 1st of November. đˇď¸
Happy Halloween!
